Located in Orange County, California, Laguna Niguel is one of the first completely mastered planned communities in California. Laguna Niguel was begun to be built in 1959. Laguna Niguel was incorporated in 1989 and became the 29th city in Orange County. The total area of Laguna Niguel is 14.9 square miles, 14.8 square miles is land and .05 square miles is water. Laguna Niguel is situated in the hilly basin close to the southern end of the San Joaquin Hills. Laguna Niguel is just east of Laguna Beach and is also bordered by Dana Point, San Juan Capistrano, Mission Viejo, Laguna Hills and Aliso Viejo. Laguna is the Spanish word for lagoon and Niguel is derived from “Nigueli” which is the name of the Juaneno Indian Village once located near Aliso Creek. The population of Laguna Niguel is approximately 63,000 people. Saddleback College is located in Laguna Niguel, serving 20,000 students. Laguna Niguel students attend schools in the Capistrano Unified School District. There are seven elementary schools serving Laguna Niguel, one middle school and two high schools. The high schools are Dana Hills located in Dana Point and Aliso Niguel High School located in Aliso Viejo. There are also sixteen private schools in the Laguna Niguel area serving 1800 students.

Laguna Niguel is home to The Niguel Botanical Preserve. This eighteen acre botanical garden is located within the Crown Valley Community Park, in the city of Laguna Niguel. The mission of the botanical garden is to create display gardens filled with plants appropriate to the Southern California climate. These plants have been gathered both locally and from regions around the world with similar climates, such as the Mediterranean. The botanical preserve started in 1981, as a community vegetable garden, with the goals of community education and creating a space for future generations. In 1985, it was incorporated as a non-profit organization and has been run as volunteer organization ever since. The gardens are loosely organized according to the plant collections based on region; Australia, Africa, South America, Mediterranean and California/Mexico. There are walking trails throughout the gardens for visitors to enjoy the various areas.
